Where the shade sits deepest

The pit and lower pavilion carry the strongest cover. Pit 1 reads near 94 percent shaded across the event, with Pit 2 and pavilion sections 101, 102, 202 and 203 all around 88 percent. Those are the seats that barely register the sun.

The open lawn is the sunnier end. Lawn 6, 7, 8 and 9 all sit around 63 percent shade, a solid figure for open ground, but enough direct light early that a hat earns its place.

In high summer the sun sets here around 8:27 PM, so a 7 PM show begins with daylight to spare. At the start the sun is low, about 15 degrees up and bearing west-northwest, which means glare across the seats rather than heat from overhead. That opening light is why the from-6 PM shade figure, near 51 percent, runs below the full-event average.

From there it eases. As the sun sinks toward the horizon it pulls off the seating, and once it sets the entire amphitheater is shaded. The back half of a show, and any later start, is the easy stretch, sunglasses handle the rest of the western glare.
