Santa Barbara Bowl in high summer: why almost every seat sits in shade

Few outdoor amphitheaters make the shade question this easy to answer. Across a typical 7:00 PM show at the Santa Barbara Bowl, our model puts about 91 percent of the seating in shade, and even the seats that catch the most sun still spend two-thirds of the evening out of it. If you have been burned at other venues, this Santa Barbara room is a soft landing.

Where the shade holds

The covered and lower sections do the best. The pit rows come in near fully shaded for the whole show, with Pit 2 and Pit 3 around 99 percent, and the pavilion sections behind them, including 208, 107 and 106, sit at roughly 98 percent. If shade is your only priority, aim there and stop reading.

The lawn is where the sun lingers, though "lingers" is relative here. Lawn 3 is the sunniest patch at about 79 percent shaded over the event, with Lawn 9, Lawn 2 and Lawn 1 close behind between 68 and 77 percent. At most venues those would be the good seats.

Timing and the evening sun

The Bowl faces broadly west, and in high summer the sun is already low by showtime. At 7:00 PM the sun sits only about 12 degrees above the horizon out to the west-northwest, and it sets around 8:11 PM. That means the harshest glare, if you get any, comes in the first hour on the west-facing lawn; once the sun drops behind the ridge the whole venue evens out. A support-act start is the only stretch worth planning around.

For a specific date and seat, the interactive shade map runs the sun geometry for your show time. But the short version for the Santa Barbara Bowl is unusually kind: pick almost anything under cover and you will be fine, and even the lawn treats you gently after the first act.
