Two slabs of red sandstone do the work that a roof does everywhere else. Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado has no canopy, no overhang, and no covered section, 9,525 seats fully open to the sky, and yet a typical 7:00 PM summer show here averages 84 percent shade across the event. The trick is orientation: the bowl faces east-northeast, so the evening sun works on the back of the crowd, not the front of it, before setting behind the top rows.

Evening shows: the sun is behind you, then gone

At a 7:00 PM start in high summer, the sun sits about 15 degrees above the horizon to the west-northwest, which at Red Rocks means behind and above the audience, sinking toward the rock formations and the hogback ridge at the top of the venue. Sunset lands at 8:27 PM, and the terrain steals the direct sun earlier than the clock suggests. From 6:00 PM onward the venue averages 63 percent shade, and that number climbs fast as the sun drops.

Day shows and matinees: the geometry flips hard

Everything above applies to evening shows. Turn the clock back and Red Rocks becomes one of the most exposed venues anywhere: a morning or midday event puts the sun straight into the crowd's face, with the east-facing bowl acting as a collector. There is no cover to retreat to, no concourse overhang, no shade structure, nothing. For yoga mornings, film matinees, or early festival slots, sunscreen and a hat are not suggestions, and the sandstone reflects light back at you from both sides.

The altitude sharpens all of this. Denver-area sun is thinner-air sun; it burns faster than the temperature implies, even on a mild day. July afternoons in Morrison top out around a moderate 84 degrees, so raw heat is rarely the problem at Red Rocks, exposure is. And the same altitude that toughens the daytime makes evenings drop off quickly once the sun is behind the rock. A layer for after sunset is standard local practice even in July, when the show ends into genuinely cool air.

How to buy for the sun you will actually get

For the standard 7:00 PM show, sun exposure should barely influence your ticket: the reserved rows spend most of the show in terrain shadow, and the difference between the best and worst sections is about a half hour of low, glare-angle sun early in the set. If that half hour matters to you, photosensitivity, small kids, a long day already in the books, aim low in the bowl and toward the sections the engine favors rather than the top rows.

For anything earlier in the day, assume full sun from doors until the terrain finally intervenes, and pack accordingly.
