Of all the places to watch High-A baseball in July, Eugene asks the least of you. PK Park, the 4,000-seat open-air home of the Eugene Emeralds, a San Francisco Giants affiliate, sits in the Willamette Valley, where summer is warm and dry but seldom brutal. Shade here is a comfort question, not a safety one, and the answer mostly comes down to the long Oregon evening.

The longest twilight in the league's neighborhood

Sunset at PK Park in high summer doesn't arrive until around 8:52 PM, one of the later sunsets you'll find at a minor-league park. That means a typical 6:35 to 7:05 first pitch leaves nearly two hours of daylight baseball, and the evening sun hangs in longer than you might expect: at 7 PM it's still 17 degrees above the horizon, positioned west-northwest. If your seat faces that direction, you'll be looking into low sun through the early innings. If your back is to it, you're in shade from the start and the whole game is easy.

For evening games, glare is the only real consideration. Sensitive eyes should avoid west-facing seats for the first hour; everyone else can sit anywhere. In fact, later in the season the sunny side becomes the smart side, Eugene evenings cool off noticeably once the sun drops, and by late August a little lingering sunlight on your back around first pitch is a feature.
