Iroquois Amphitheater: the pavilion stays cool, the lawn bakes

Louisville's long July evenings give Iroquois Amphitheater a late sunset and a real gap between its shaded pavilion and its sunny lawn. This Kentucky venue is mapped, so the shade figures below are drawn from our model, not estimated.

The shade split

Over a typical evening event the amphitheater averages about 68 percent shade overall, which is decent, but the coverage is uneven and worth planning around.

• The front and center hold the shade. Pit 1 runs about 88 percent shaded, and sections 202, 101, 102, 201 and 203 all sit near 87 percent.
• Those pavilion seats are the reliable pick if you want out of the sun.
• The lawn is the exposed end. Lawn 7 and Lawn 9 run about 50 percent shaded, Lawn 8 near 45 percent, and even section 212 out on the pavilion edge sits around 45 percent.

That is the honest trade at Iroquois Amphitheater: the lawn is the open, cheaper spot and it takes real sun through the first part of the show, while the pavilion interior stays comfortable.

Working with the evening sun

In high summer, sunset in Louisville falls late, around 9:05 PM. A 7 PM show therefore opens in full daylight, with the sun about 22 degrees up and low in the west near a bearing of 280 degrees. From 6 PM the venue averages only about 44 percent shade, so the early evening is the exposed stretch, especially out on the lawn; the figure climbs steadily as the sun sinks toward that late sunset.

Kentucky summers are warm and humid, so on the lawn the opening hour rewards water, a hat and sunscreen. Sit in the pavilion and you skip most of that. Either way, once the sun drops the whole venue moves into shade and the heat eases.
