The name is the seating chart. Events on the Great Lawn put you on a wide, open field in the heart of Central Park, with mature trees around the edges and nothing at all overhead. New York's midsummer sun sets at 8:25 PM, and at 7 PM it is already low, about 14 degrees above the horizon, west-northwest, so evening events start in slanted light and end in dusk.

Where shade actually exists

We haven't mapped a stage orientation for the Great Lawn; setups for events on a big lawn vary, so we make no claims about which side of the crowd shades first. The dependable pattern is simpler: the middle of the lawn is full sun until the sun drops, and the tree lines around the perimeter are where real shade lives. Arrive early for a daytime event and the shady edges fill first, that's true of every large event lawn, and there's no reason to think this one is different.

• Daytime events on the Great Lawn are the real sun commitment: hours of overhead light on open grass. Bring water, sunscreen, and something to sit on.
• Trees to the west of wherever you settle buy you shade earliest as the afternoon wears on.
