Midland sits far enough north that a July evening at Dow Diamond stays bright almost to the last out. The sun doesn't set until around 9:15 PM in high summer, which means a typical first pitch between 6:35 and 7:05 PM comes with more than two hours of daylight still on the clock. If you're hoping the sun problem solves itself by the third inning, it won't, not in June or July at this latitude.

That's low enough to slip under most roof lines and glare straight into any seat that faces west. As the game goes on it keeps sinking toward the northwest, so the worst of it is the first hour or so; by the late innings the light is soft and the temperature has usually eased with it.

Day games are a different animal. For a 1:10 PM start the sun is 67 degrees up in the south-southeast, nearly overhead. At that height, shade comes almost entirely from whatever is directly above you: a grandstand roof, an overhang, an umbrella on the concourse. Mid-Michigan summers are milder than what fans endure further south, but a full afternoon under an open sky is still a sunscreen-and-hat situation.

Picking a seat when the orientation isn't verified

If you're at a standard evening game, expect one bright, westward-glaring hour, then a long, comfortable northern twilight, one of the genuine perks of watching baseball this far up the map.
