They close the retractable roof, run the air conditioning, and take the sun out of the game entirely. For most summer dates, all 48,330 seats are effectively shaded, and the sun exposure that matters is the walk between your car and the gate.
From roughly late spring through early fall, expect the roof shut and the building cooled. That makes Chase Field one of the few places in baseball where a 1:10 PM start in July is not just tolerable but comfortable, while the sidewalk outside is not. Phoenix highs run about 106°F in June, 107°F in July, and 109°F in August, and the sun does not set until 7:38 PM in July, so even fans arriving for an evening game are walking in through full daylight and serious heat. Plan the outside part: park close or use covered garages, carry water for the approach, and do not linger on open plazas with kids at midday.
Shoulder-season games and cool evenings sometimes get open-air baseball, and then the geometry matters. Chase Field points due north from home plate to center field. At a 1:10 PM first pitch in July the sun is nearly overhead, 76 degrees up, bearing southwest, which is why our model puts only about a third of seats in shade across a day game under open sky. Even with a climate-controlled building, the desert gets a vote. Hydrate before you arrive, not just once you are inside. Sunscreen still matters for tailgating, walking the Legacy District, or any pre-game time outdoors, midday sun in Phoenix burns fast. If you are choosing between a day game and a night game purely on comfort and the roof is closed either way, the difference is mostly your commute: after sunset the outside air finally starts to ease, while a 1 PM arrival puts you outdoors at the day's peak. September brings relief only in relative terms; afternoons still run around 100°F.
