Buck's Backyard outdoor stage: beating the Buda sun

Central Texas heat is the first thing to plan around at Buck's Backyard. This outdoor stage in Buda runs open to the sky, July afternoons here are punishing, and the sun stays up late, 8:34 PM in high summer, still 18 degrees above the horizon at a typical 7 PM start. The saving grace is in the numbers: our engine grades Buck's Backyard 76 percent shaded overall across a typical evening show, and 51 percent from 6 PM onward.

Down front is the shady end

We've verified the layout, and it explains the numbers: the crowd sits east-southeast of the stage, facing roughly toward the west-northwest, which is exactly where the evening sun hangs. The stage structure blocks that low light for the closest spots, so the most shaded positions are Pits 1 and 2 at 94 percent, then Pit 3 and pavilion sections 101, 102, and 103 at 81. The back of the lawn takes the sun instead: Lawns 6 through 9 are the sunniest spots at 63 percent shaded each.
