The good news at Pike Place Market is that much of it is under cover. Seattle's most famous market runs through arcades and multi-level halls, so the stalls and walkways inside give you genuine shade even at midday, a rarity among open-air landmarks. The trade is that the streets and sidewalks around the market, the cobbled stretches where the crowds spill out, are exposed. Seattle's climate keeps this an easy place to plan for: July afternoons peak near 80°F, and the rest of summer is milder still.

Cover inside, sun on the cobbles

Step into the main arcades and you are out of the sun entirely; the market's roofs and levels do the shading for you. Outside, the surrounding streets are open, and which side is comfortable depends on the hour. At 3 PM in high summer the sun sits about 56 degrees high on a southwest bearing near 228 degrees, so the buildings throw their shade toward the northeast side of the streets as the afternoon advances. Follow the shaded side of the street between covered sections, and use the arcades themselves whenever the sun is at its strongest. The open plazas and viewpoints looking out over the water are the most exposed spots in the whole market.

When to go

With sunrise near 5:27 AM and sunset around 9:02 PM, Seattle summer days are long and bright, but rarely hot. The planning here is about crowds and comfort more than heat.

• Mornings are cool and the market is at its liveliest as vendors set up; the low sun keeps the streets shaded.
• Midday is fine inside the covered halls even on the warmest days.
• Late afternoon brings lower sun and softer light over the water, and the outdoor cobbles ease into shade.

Because summer tops out near 80°F, there is no real heat-danger window to manage. The shoulder seasons are gentle too, June near 73°F and September also around 73°F, and often less crowded than the July and August peak.

The waterfront edge

The overlooks along the western edge of Pike Place, where the market opens toward Elliott Bay, are the sunniest part of the visit, open sky and light coming off the water. That is the spot to enjoy in the morning or late afternoon rather than at the height of midday. When the sun is high, drift back into the covered arcades, which is where the market's shade genuinely lives.
