• Morning fog often burns off by midday, so a later start can mean brighter, milder conditions.

Because the climate is so temperate, there is no heat window to avoid. Highs hold in the low 60s across the summer and only nudge up in early fall, so any month is comfortable for a walk out on the pier. The variable is fog and wind, not temperature.

The end of the pier

The outer railings, where the sea lions haul out and the bay views open up, are the most exposed part of Pier 39, full sky, full wind, and light bouncing off the water. On a sunny day that is a fine place to linger; on a windy one it is the coldest spot out there. Sunscreen is still worth it when the sky is clear, because the breeze hides how much sun you are getting, but the dominant reality here is a cool, exposed deck rather than a hot one.
