Mall of America: the sun is a parking-lot problem, not an indoor one

Here is the unusual case where the main attraction has a roof over all of it. Mall of America in Bloomington is enclosed and climate-controlled, so the shade-and-heat question is not about the shops or the indoor amusement park at their center; those stay a steady temperature no matter what July is doing outside. The sun you have to manage is the sun in the parking ramps, the transit plaza, and the walk from your car to the doors.

Minnesota summers are milder than the mall's size might suggest. July afternoon highs run about 84°F, with August at 80, so a hot day here is warm rather than dangerous. The sharper edge is the parking structures and the open lots, which trap heat and sit in full afternoon sun.

Where the outdoor exposure is

At 3 PM on a July day the sun sits around 59 degrees up on a southwest bearing near 230. The exposed parts of a Mall of America trip are all around the perimeter:

• The upper decks of the open-air parking ramps, which take direct sun and radiate heat off the concrete.
• The transit station and the walkways connecting it to the entrances.
• The short but sun-struck crossings between the ramps and the doors.

If you are parking, the lower and interior levels of the ramps stay shaded and much cooler than the top decks. Coming by light rail, the covered portions of the transit plaza are your shade; the open stretches are brief. Either way, the outdoor part of the visit is measured in minutes, and once you are inside the sun is a non-issue.

Timing, mostly for the drive and the lot

Because the interior never changes, timing your visit is really about the parking and the outdoor approach. Sunrise in July is around 5:41 AM and sunset is late, near 8:56 PM, so summer evenings stay bright well past dinner. If you want the coolest walk from the car, arrive earlier in the day or after the sun has dropped low in the west, and skip the top deck of the ramp in favor of a shaded level.

None of this rises to a heat-safety concern given Bloomington's moderate highs, but a dark car on a top deck in July will still be an oven when you come back to it. Park in the shade, not just for comfort now but for the drive home.
